How is Your Electricity Bill Calculated? (Full Breakdown)

Your monthly electricity bill consists of several components. Understanding each helps you identify why your bill is high and where you can save.

1. Energy Charges (Per‑Unit Cost)

Based on NEPRA 2026 tariff slabs. The more units you consume, the higher the per‑unit rate (progressive structure). Protected consumers (≤200 units) pay lower rates across all slabs.

2. Fixed Charges (Monthly Capacity Charge)

A fixed amount applied every month regardless of consumption: Rs 200 for ≤100 units, Rs 300 for 101‑200 units, Rs 400 for >200 units.

3. General Sales Tax (GST) – 18%

Applied on the total of Energy Charges + Fixed Charges. This is a government levy.

4. Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA)

A variable monthly surcharge reflecting changes in international fuel prices. FCA can be positive (adds to your bill) or negative (reduces your bill). It is not included in our base calculator – check your DISCO’s latest FCA rate.

5. Neelum-Jhelum (NJ) Surcharge

A small per‑unit levy (approx Rs 0.50‑1.00 per unit) to finance the NJ hydropower project.

6. TV License Fee

Rs 35 per month if you own a television. Appears on most bills.

📌 Example Calculation: For 300 units (non‑protected): Energy = (50×3.95)+(50×7.74)+(100×13.01)+(100×33.10) = Rs 13,200. Fixed = Rs 400. Subtotal = Rs 13,600. GST 18% = Rs 2,448. FCA (say Rs 3.5/unit) = Rs 1,050. NJ surcharge = Rs 150. Total = Rs 17,248.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pakistan Electricity Bills

Q1: Why does my bill vary even with the same units?
The most common reason is Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA), which changes monthly based on international fuel prices. Also, crossing the 200‑unit threshold makes you non‑protected, which can double your bill.
Q2: What is the difference between protected and non‑protected consumer?
Protected consumers use ≤200 units per month and pay subsidised rates. Non‑protected consumers use >200 units and pay much higher rates for all units consumed that month. Read detailed guide →
Q3: How can I check my LESCO / IESCO bill online?
Visit the official PITC portal for your DISCO (e.g., lesco.pitc.com.pk) and enter your 14‑digit reference number. You can also use JazzCash or Easypaisa. Full guide here →
Q4: How can I reduce my electricity bill without changing appliances?
Set AC to 26°C, unplug standby devices, replace bulbs with LED, and – most importantly – stay under 200 units to remain protected. Summer saving tips →
Q5: Is solar net metering worth it in Pakistan?
Yes, with tariffs up to Rs 42.50/unit, a 5kW system can pay for itself in 2.5‑3 years and provide free electricity for 20+ years. Step‑by‑step guide →
