With electricity tariffs at all-time highs (up to Rs 42.50/unit), solar net metering has become the best long-term investment for Pakistani households. A typical 5kW system pays for itself in 2.5-3 years and then provides nearly free electricity for 20+ years. This guide walks you through the exact application process for all DISCOs – LESCO, IESCO, MEPCO, FESCO, and others.

Quick Overview: Net metering allows you to sell excess electricity generated by your solar panels back to your DISCO. You are credited at roughly 75% of the retail tariff (e.g., if you pay Rs 35/unit, you get Rs 26.25/unit for exports).

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Hire an NEPRA-Certified Solar Vendor

Your vendor must be approved by NEPRA. They will design the system, provide a feasibility report, and handle most paperwork. Ask for references and at least 3 quotes.

Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

  • Copy of CNIC (owner)
  • Latest electricity bill (showing 14-digit reference number)
  • Property ownership proof (or rent agreement with owner’s NOC)
  • Feasibility study / system design from vendor
  • Single-line wiring diagram
  • Net metering application form (available on DISCO website or from vendor)

Step 3: Submit Application to Your DISCO

Visit your DISCO’s net metering facilitation center (or submit online if available). Pay the application fee (typically Rs 5,000-10,000). Your DISCO will:

  • Acknowledge receipt and assign a case number.
  • Conduct a technical feasibility study (within 15-30 days).
  • If approved, issue a “Letter of Intent” (LOI).

Step 4: Install the Solar System

After receiving LOI, your vendor installs the system and applies for an inspection. The DISCO then inspects and installs a bidirectional meter (cost approx Rs 15,000-25,000).

Step 5: Sign Net Metering Agreement

Once the bidirectional meter is installed, you sign a net metering agreement valid for 10 years (renewable). Your next bill will show solar generation, consumption, and net amount.

Total processing time: Typically 30-60 days for most DISCOs (LESCO and IESCO are faster).
